Hey Makers! Welcome to the monthly challenges.

The continually updated master list of all the maker challenges is always up in the menu bar. But if you want the list for just May’s challenges, here you go! This also includes challenges that are ongoing (recently updated!!) and those ending this month that may have started earlier in the year.

May 2019 Challenges

52 Week Sewing Challenge: a Facebook-only challenge with weekly themes. May’s are:

  • sew your newest fabric
  • sew a button
  • sew a kid or baby pattern
  • sew a dress
  • sew something soft/warm

#12patternsplus2019: a monthly challenge to sew the same pattern as the rest of the community and reveal the garments on the same day. Join the Facebook group for more info. May’s pattern is the Pattern for Pirates Summer Kimono.

#BeachBabyChallenge: a Facebook-only contest, this month’s theme is anything beach-related (swimsuits, swim accessories, etc). Submissions must be posted in the Facebook album. Join the Sew Alongs & Sewing Contests Facebook group to see full details. Ends May 31.

#LetsSewThisTogether: @havingsewmuchfun and @makerheart have a theme for May: fleurs!

#MadeLikeMaisel: influenced by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, create a 1950s-inspired outfit and tag @minimaedelcreates while using the hashtag. Runs through July 5.

#MeMadeFlatLay: if you don’t want to pose in your garments, make a flatlay! Runs concurrently with #MeMadeMay19.

#MeMadeMay19: Me Made May is back for a 10th year! And with an official (and different than what you’re used to) hashtag. Sign up on Zoe’s blog.

#MMMay19Plus, #MeMadeMayPlus, and #MMMayPlus: running concurrently with #MeMadeMay19 for plus size sewists!

#MMMayMensWear: making men’s clothing this May? Add this hashtag to your posts! Runs concurrently with #MeMadeMay19.

#ReMadeMay: remake or refashion something that didn’t work the first time. Runs concurrently with #MeMadeMay19.

#SewBraveSewcialists: push out of your comfort zone and sew a fabric, pattern or technique that intimidates you. More info on the Sewcialists blog. Runs through May.

#SewingChallenge2019: a monthly theme prompt. May’s theme is using a shop bought item. Join the Facebook group for more info.

#SewingMonochromeMay: the May theme for #sewingpatternsandprints, tag @voiceofacreative, @sewn_on_the_tyne, and @purplesewingcloud for prizes.

#SewMyStyle2019: each month brings a new theme and potential sponsor prizes. May’s theme is button up shirts featuring the Blank Slate Patterns Novelista and Designer Stitch Sedona Shirt.

#SketchMyStyle: @MyBodyModel kicks off May’s theme with #diyootd, using your own MBM croquis!

#TheVintageFashionChallenge: weekly themes and daily prompts for vintage fashionistas, brought to you by @iliveinmylab@makethislook and @tinyangrycrafts. Ends May 31.

#HandmadeHappyDance: started by @amynicolestudio to encourage makers to don their favorite handmade garment while dancing to their favorite song. Join on Instagram anytime.

#LetsDiscuss2019: for the book bloggers, to engage in lively debates all year long

#MakeNine: a low-key year-long prompt to encourage the making of garments (sewing, knitting, crocheting, etc), using either this or #2019MakeNine. Join anytime.

#MakeYourStash: 3-month challenge to use the older (possibly neglected) fabrics in your stash, with prizes from various sponsors. Follow @timetosew and @pilar_bear for sustainability-inspired prompts every Monday through June 2019.

#PoseLikeTheModel: born out of @annachristinasews feelings “about how ridiculous it is that I can’t find patterns with a realistic variety of models,” this draws attention to the very real lack of diversity on pattern models in terms of size, age, and skin color.

#SewBreastFeeding: for showing off breastfeeding-friendly outfits.

#SewcialistsHelp: paired with #SewingSOS for seeking advice or help on Instagram.

#SewingLeftovers: a gentle nudge to encourage sustainability in fabric waste. Check out @shaunimagnifique‘s post on The Magnificent Thread. Join anytime.

#SewSOS: paired with #SewcialistsHelp for seeking advice or ask for help by using this hashtag on Instagram.

#SewTogetherForSummer: this year’s theme is jumpsuits! But there’s a wide interpretation of that, from overalls to rompers. Follow @sewsarahsmith, @sewing_in_spain and @rocco.sienna, use the hashtag, and post with your country of residence for prizes. See the blog post for pattern discount codes. Ends June 21.
