I’ve been nominated for a Liebster Award!
Up until I randomly stumbled on a backlink this weekend, I had no idea that a Liebster Award existed or what it was. But it turns out that bloggers nominate bloggers and then they answer a bunch of questions and we all get to read new blogs.
And you get to have a cute little badge on your blog. Obviously, we don’t need no stinkin’ badges, but they’re still cool.
After a little bit of research, I’ve found there are official Liebster Award rules and a whole competition-like aspect. While a few other blogs have asserted their own rules, I’m going by The Jack Project’s guidelines:
- Create your acceptance blog post
- Answer the questions given to you
- Create 5 more questions for your nominees to answer
- Submit your entry here
So thank you to Sammi from SammiNorman.com for the nomination and turning me on to this cool award! Now I have to answer the questions she posed. Then I’ll link to my nominees and give them a list of questions, too.
Liebster Award Questions
If you had an unlimited budget and one day to shop for anything, where would you go and what would you buy?
I have always wanted my own plane. It could take me anywhere in the world!
I’m a beer tourist, so everywhere I go, I find the local breweries and enjoy the hell out of them. But an unlimited budget does not make an unlimited liver.
So I would take my plane and crew around the world buying up the best fabrics and industrial level machinery and outfit the most gorgeous maker studio and communal space.
With a brewery. Obvs. Then invite the community to come to use it.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
This one dates back to my childhood.
Our parents drilled into us to be impeccable with our manners and that doors would always be open to us. So I was mostly a polite kid.
Even today I have a hard time being outright rude to people. I have my utter bitch moments (which I don’t apologize for), but something something flies with honey and all that.
I do love this quote attributed to Winston Churchill:
Tact is the ability to tell someone to go to hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip.
It’s my goal to make people better versions of themselves. Even if that better version still deserves to go to hell.
What is one thing you could eat everyday for the rest of your life?
Cheese. All the cheese. My plane ride above would include much cheese mongering.
A day without cheese for me is like a day without air. I’d choose it over beer. I’d choose it WITH beer. I’d choose it over pizza (with pepperoni, black olives, and green bell peppers). I could write love sonnets about cheese.
But never Swiss cheese. Ick.
What is your go-to outfit for a normal day?
I’m happy to say that it’s most likely something I’ve made!
Today, for example, I’m in my blue Lander shorts. These are my favorite summer shorts. Why haven’t I made more pairs? Seriously, I should have at least as many Landers and I have Ogdens, right? I need at least one more pair to even the score.
I topped that with a purple RTW wrap top and purple flip flops cuz I’m getting my toes done after this.
Not in purple, probably.
What is the meal you make after a long day and you need something easy?
If I’m being honest, I’m probably stopping at Taco Bell for their burritos. No shade.
But our fastest go-to meal to make is Erika’s Chicken with Smoked Paprika. It’s still one of the easiest and best go-to recipes I’ve ever made. There are all of 3 ingredients and it’s done in 15 minutes. Chicken thighs are a staple in this house, so they’re always on hand.
Pair that with a green salad topped with feta cheese plus a glass of wine (or a Belgian beer), and life is good again.
What is the meal you order/make for celebrations or great days?
That’s easy: steak.
On anniversaries and birthdays, we gravitate to thick, juicy steaks. It’s El Hubo’s specialty. Usually, it’s a ribeye pan-seared on a cast iron skillet with just a little salt, pepper, and some garlic. I like to have a pat of garlic butter to make it extra decadent.
And then it’s served with asparagus or something equally green. For digestive purposes, of course.
Oh, and a bottle of red wine, either Zinfandel or Syrah.
What is one style trend you want to try but haven’t?
Mac recently posted about wearing head wraps in professional spaces. As a non-black woman, I never felt like it was appropriate for me to wear a head wrap, but I’ve always wanted to because I think they’re beautiful.
I placate myself with scarves, of which I have over 50. I have a bit of an addiction to scarves.
Maybe one day I’ll find my cojones and wrap up my increasingly thinning hair. Cultural constructs aside, one day (probably sooner than I’d like to admit) I’m going to have come to terms with my balding head.
What would you do with one whole day to yourself and no rules?
Quite frankly, this is almost every day of my life. As a full-time stay-at-home-blogger without kids, I’m living an enviable life. I do make jokes about eating bonbons and lazing about on the couch, but that has never actually happened—though maybe it should? Maybe one of these days “for the ‘gram,” as the kids say.
The only excuses I have for time away from creating stuff is when I’m sick or otherwise occupied with appointments. But most days I’m in my little studio hacking a pattern, writing these posts, or over in the kitchen photographing another recipe.
Really, I’m just trying to hone my crafts. And I’m in a position now where I get to focus on that almost 100% of the time. I’m super grateful for that.
What is your #1 beauty must have?
Sunscreen. There’s a reason no one believes I’m in my 40s. The secret is sunscreen.
I’ve slathered it on my face EVERY SINGLE DAY for the better part of 20 years. I don’t even wear makeup much anymore, but I never EVER go without sunscreen.
Do yourself a favor and add that to your beauty routine, if you haven’t already.
What is your favorite piece or outfit in your closet?
I’ve never felt more beautiful than on my wedding day, in my Oleg Cassini gown. It weighed 12 pounds and I felt like a fairy princess all day!
But that doesn’t actually live in my closet (it’s at my parents’ house for safekeeping). In my current closet, my favorite dress is the Orchid I spent last month hacking. Second to that is the Roscoe blouse. They’re both flirty feminine but relaxed. I guess that’s exactly my style.
And I can’t find it, probably because my husband is hiding it since he shrank it, but I had a white linen v-neck t-shirt from Banana Republic that is absolutely the best RTW tee shirt ever…I really should make him buy me another one!
Petite Font Liebster Award Nominees
Originally the Liebster Award was meant to highlight new bloggers or those with smaller readerships. So in keeping with the spirit of that, I’m nominating some of my favorite and varied reads that I hope get a little more attention.
- Svetlana at A Hungry Pen. She writes absolutely engrossing diner tales.
- Nikki at Seams Like Style. She’s an absolutely fearless maker.
- Kat at Angel Who Swears. Because who doesn’t love a reformed good girl?
- Catherine at Crafting Through Time. She’s keeping Sunday Lately alive, plus making pretty things!
- John at John Reiber. Ever wondered about clam chowder popsicles? He’s got the answer.
- Emily at Replicate Then Deviate. She’s incredibly talented, at both sewing AND fooding.
- Mona at Wayward Sparkles. She’s winning all the awards!
Liebster Award Questions for Nominees
I came up with a lot more than the 5 required questions, so I’m going to let my nominees pick and choose from the following 8 questions. Do at least 5 or all 8!
- How would your imaginary friend describe you?
- Which best fits your personality and why: robot, pirate, or alien?
- What is your favorite random holiday and how do you celebrate it?
- What’s cuter: kittens or puppies? Defend your choice.
- What is the strangest food you’ve eaten and would you do it again?
- Sell me on your favorite binge-worthy show, why would I want to watch it?
- What are you spectacularly bad at?
- What was your life like before the Internet?
Thank you again to Sammi for the nomination for this Liebster Award. The blogging community is awesome! I’m looking forward to reading everyone’s responses and seeing who ultimately wins for 2019.
You can watch the countdown over on The Jack Project.
Did my answers reveal anything surprising to you? Who is your favorite blogger? Will you nominate someone else for this award? Let me know in the comments!
