Amazon Prime Day is next week, and is actually a 48-hour event. Beginning at midnight PDT Tuesday, October 13th it runs through the 14th at 11:59 pm in the Pacific time zone.

Marketers are considering this the start of the holiday shopping season, 6 weeks earlier than Black Friday. 2020 has been an extraordinary year, and people’s desire for normalcy is expected to drive this jump start.

So what is Prime Day exactly? Here’s how Amazon themselves describe it:

Prime Day is an annual deal event just for Prime members on Oct. 13-14, delivering incredible savings on products from small businesses & top brands.

Because Prime Day is exclusively for Prime membership holders, you have to have to sign up in order to take advantage of the “epic deals.” However there is at least one deal you can take advantage of early if you’re not planning to get the membership:

Signing Up for Amazon Prime

Amazon Music is included with Prime membership though. And you can get a free 30-day trial. Prime membership is available in the following countries: United States, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, Spain, Singapore, Netherlands, Mexico, Luxembourg, Japan, Italy, Germany, France, China, Canada, Belgium, Austria, Australia, Turkey and Brazil.

For those with college kids, Amazon Prime Student is an especially good deal. College students get a 6-month trial and then only pay $6.49 per month thereafter. It also comes with a slew of benefits, like Showtime for a year at only $0.99/month.

Once you have your membership sorted, there are a number of benefits that come with it right away. Most people are aware that it guarantees 2-day shipping on almost everything in the Amazon marketplace. But now there are also millions of items that are available for 1-day shipping too.

A select list of other benefits include:

  • Prime at Whole Foods Market: Exclusive savings for Prime members, 5% Back for eligible Prime members with the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card and 2-hour delivery in select cities
  • Prime Wardrobe: Try on clothes, shoes, jewelry and accessories from the comfort of your home, and pay only for what you keep.
  • Prime Reading: Prime Reading gives you unlimited access on any device to more than a thousand eBooks, popular magazines, comics, books with Audible narration and more. Learn more about Prime Reading.
  • Amazon First Reads: Read one of next month’s new releases now for free.
  • Prime Video: Stream thousands of movies and TV shows, including exclusive Amazon Originals.

  • Share Your Prime Benefits: Link your account with one other adult to share shipping, streaming access to movies and TV shows, Prime Reading and more for free.

These are just a few of the nearly 30 benefits included in Prime. Not to mention the diaper delivery (plus food too) for parents to avoid having to do shopping with babies in tow.

Other Retailers

It’s not only Amazon jumping on the early shopping bandwagon. A slew of retailers including Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Office Depot, Overstock, 1-800-Flowers and more are preparing for amazon prime day. They too will have sales next week (if they don’t already).

This is probably due to the social distancing requirements that the frenzied nature of in-store Black Friday shopping won’t support. Avoid the store. Stay safe.

And if you’re in the US, these sales will probably continue past November 3rd, so don’t worry if you have to wait!
