Welcome to the 2021 Maker Challenges list! This is the most comprehensive list of maker challenges on the internet—but I can only add things I know about!

Ongoing Challenges

2021 Word Challenge: join host @youcanstartnow with this prompt-based photo challenge on Instagram. Use hashtag #2021WordChallenge. The 4 weekly prompts are exactly the same each month to challenge your creativity.

Free Pattern Wardrobe Challenge: sewist @doctorstitches is challenging herself to build a new spring/summer wardrobe solely from free patterns. You can join the fun using the hashtag #SewingWithDoctorStitches and join her Facebook group.

Monday Prompt Project: Mixed Media Art School will post a prompt every Monday on Instagram to inspire your week and your own art. Use hashtag #MondayPromptProject or join the Facebook group to participate.

#MyMakesForTheMonth: a monthly challenge to show off your favorite indie pattern and fabric companies. Follow @sewmuchtodesign, share the monthly image, then post your own grid of your makes at month’s end to win prizes. New sponsors each month.

Reading Women Challenge: join the Reading Women podcast and spend 2021 enjoying 24 themed choices of books by womxn. Share your progress on Instagram with the hashtag #ReadingWomenChallenge. Full details and explanations of each category are available on the Reading Women Podcast site.

Sew 5 Then Buy: hosted by @experimental_sewist, bust through your pattern and fabric stashes by committing to make 5 garments before buying something new. Track your progress by numbering your posts and using the hashtag #Sew5ThenBuy.

Sew Creative Lounge 2021 Sewing Challenge: join @sewcreativelounge‘s newsletter to get the details on this year long event. Each month will have a new theme. Use hashtag #SCLSewingChallenge.

Sewing Bowl Challenge: follow host @salonmishawn for complete details. Choose your next garment by putting options in 7 separate bowls based around: pattern, project, color, solid/print, fabric type, mystery, and timeframe. Use hashtag #SewingBowlChallenge.

Style Imitating Art: join Instagram hosts @terrigardner, @_meadowtree, @daenelt, and @14shadesofgrey to use art as inspiration for your outfits. The coordinators post a new art piece every Monday. The Mendy Project: join me in another year of trying to repair and reuse stuff around the house. Tag me @petitefont on Instagram and use the hashtag #TheMendyProject.

Whole 30 Fabric Challenge: join host Jacinta @pinkmimosabyjacinta in using up your fabric stash. The goal is to use 30 yards of your existing fabric before buying anymore. And if you do buy some, then you have to start over. Jacinta even provided a link to a tracking spreadsheet. Use hashtag #Whole30FabricChallenge.


January Maker Challenges

21 Days of 2021: join @crankycranium to kick 2021 on a positive note. Use hashtag #CrankysArtClub to tag your posts using any art medium to illustrate the daily prompts. Runs through January 21.

21 Days to Stitching Everyday: join @elizabethmadethis using hashtag #21DayStitch in this gentle 3-week challenge to create a daily sewing habit. Runs January 7-27.

30 Days of Creativity: join @kelseyschu_ for a creativity challenge between January and February. While she is using the time to write poetry, you can use these 30 days to flex your creative muscles to create whatever you want. Use the hashtag #30DaysOfCreativity. Runs Jan 22-Feb 21.

BHM Pattern Designers: to celebrate Black History Month, join sewists Nateida of Sew Natural Dane and Keira of Island Sewcialist to focus on Black pattern designers. Sewing, knitting, and crocheting is encouraged and prizes will be awarded. Tag the hosts  @sewnaturaldane and @islandsewcialist and use the hashtag #BHMPatternDesigners to be eligible. Runs until Feb 28.

Fresh Start February: join Simply Bentley in doing one small daily task to making 2021 your year. January was more like the 13th month of last year. Let’s start over! Runs all of February.

Make A Garment A Month: the theme for February is “Fabulous Friendship February.” Click the link for theme specifics! Then tag hosts @sewing_in_spain and @suestoney and use hashtag #MAGAMSewAlong. Runs through Feb 31.

ReFebulous: the sewing challenge hosted by @madebyliesl encourages users to reuse/refashion/repair/recycle garments, fabrics, and more with daily prompts. Use the hashtag #ReFebulous. Runs through Feb 28.

Sew Your View: make the Erica puff sleeve knit maxi dress by Erica Bunker. Tag @sewyourview and use the hashtag #SewYourView to show off your garments. Runs through Feb 28.

Zero Waste Sewing: explore low- to zero-waste sewing with @sewcialists. Use the hashtag #SewcialistsZeroWaste to highlight your zero waste pattern use, a low-waste garment, or even scrapbusting projects. Runs through February.


March Maker Challenges

Frugal Frocks 2021: hosted by @frugalisama and @theyorkshiresewgirl on Instagram and YouTube, the challenge is to choose a free dress pattern and pair it with fabric already in your stash then make a dress to reveal by March 31. Use the hashtag #FrugalFrocks2021 and tag both hosts for a chance to win prizes.

IG Quilt Fest 2021: a daily IG-based prompt from host @amyscreativeside with weekly giveaways. Follow the host and use the hashtag #IGQuiltFest2021 and check out the IGTV videos for more info. Runs through March.

March Meet the Maker: organized by Joanne Hawker for Instagram, promote your maker business with a daily prompt. Grab your planning sheet and all the details on Joanne’s site. Use hashtag #MarchMeetTheMaker on Instagram. Runs through March.

Make A Garment A Month: the theme for March is “Multi March.” Click the link for theme specifics! Then tag hosts @sewing_in_spain and @suestoney and use hashtag #MAGAMSewAlong. Runs through March 31.

#MendMarch: join @visiblemend with a low-key daily prompt to fix the clothes you already own. Make friends, share, and by the host’s rules, get “extra points for comedy, cheek, and sass.” Runs through March.

Retro Sewing Challenge: hosted by @behind_shapesoffabric on Instagram, use hashtag #InspiredByRetro to show off garments made in the style of 1940s through 1960s. Use either self-drafted or ready-made patterns and you’ll be eligible for prizes! Tag the host and use the hashtag. Runs through March.

Sew Your View: make the Mood Sewciety Karri Top. Tag @sewyourview and use the hashtag #SewYourView to show off your garments. Runs through March 31.

Shuffled Ink Spring: win a chance to create playing cards for Shuffled Ink by posting your spring-related artwork on Instagram. Tag @shuffledink and use the hashtag #ShuffledInkSpring when posting. Runs March 30-May 14.

So 50 Pattern Mixing: join the @sewover50 group in mixing patterns (minimum 2) in a new garment. Tag them and use the hashtag #S050PatternMixing for a chance at a random drawing (sponsors pending). Runs March 1-31.

Wear Happy Color 2021: hosted by Katie Kortman, the original challenge was expanded to include both the making and wearing of garments and colors. Each week has a new color theme. Sew That Pattern Now 2021: hosted on Instagram by Olga of @coffeeandthread, Mijke of @sewitcurly Emi of @justaddfabric to dig through your pattern stash and MAKE them already! Use hashtag #SewThatPatternNow2021 to win potential prizes. Runs from April through May.

Tits Up Transformation Challenge: join @little.rosy.cheeks and @sewyarncraftyandstudio in celebrating projects that didn’t quite work out. Tag the hosts and use hashtag #TitsUpTransformationChallenge through June 16.

Uplift Make Along: discover and support indie designers and makers in the knitting, crochet, and Tunisian crochet worlds. Create a community and shine a spotlight on designers you think deserve more attention. Join the group on Mighty Networks and use the hashtag #UpliftMakeAlong on Instagram. AmiguruMAY 2021: the third annual Instagram event by Ilaria of @airali_gray for all fans of the crochet technique amigurumi. This fun event has the daily prompts in 9 different languages and runs through May. Use hashtags #AmiguruMAY and #AmiguruMAY2021.

Dress Like Your Grandma 2021: recreate a vintage fashion and join @raquel_sewing_knitting_in_asia for some #SewOver50 fun! More details on this post. Use hashtag #DressLikeYourGrandma2021. Runs until May 31.

Go Live In May: UK-based directory for creative indie makers @peddleUK is hosting a IG live challenge for the month of May. Get your face, product, or small business out there for everyone to see! They have gentle guidelines for engaging, plus templates, on their profile. Use hashtag #GoLiveInMay. Runs through May.

Make A Garment A Month: the theme for May is “May-be Menswear.” Click the link for theme specifics! Then tag hosts @sewing_in_spain and @suestoney and use hashtag #MAGAMSewAlong. Runs through May 31.

Me Made May 2021: the annual community event that allows you to create your own challenge to appreciate your handmade items is BACK! Check out creator Zoe’s blog for the details and how to participate, with all the hashtags for Instagram. Runs through May.

My Makes For The Month: a monthly prize-eligible challenge to feature indie pattern and fabric companies. Follow host @sewmuchtodesign (as well as the monthly sponsors), post a 1-page grid of all of that month’s completed projects by the end of each month, and maybe win a prize while enjoying everyone’s fabulous new garments. Sew Busty Challenge: join host @sewbusty for a new challenge aimed at busty body types. July’s challenge is co-hosted by @houseofmorozin to sew a summer dress. Use hashtags #SewBustyChallenge and #SewMonthlyWithHOM. Runs all of July.

Sew Japanese In July: join hosts @craftyjane_makes and @bloglessanna for their twice annual event. Using hashtag #SewJapaneseInJuly, endeavor to sew a Japanese fabric and/or use a Japanese fabric. Runs all of July.

Sew Recreate The Look: taking your inspiration from anywhere (Pinterest, designers, etc), join @jenlegg_teescreatives and @sosewdressmaking in a month-long inspiration-filled quest to recreate a specific look. There are weekly prompts as well as prizes. See this post for more information and the rules. Use the hashtag #SewRecreateTheLook. Runs July 5-31.

Sew The Sea: join @madeinmaida for a weekly prompt-based nautical-themed maker challenge. There are different sea-worthy prompts for each week, and prizes! Make something new or post something you already sewed with the hashtag #SewTheSea, while learning about how making clothes impacts our waters. Runs through July.

Stash Until September: a quilting challenge from @lifeandpeacequiltco. Can you challenge yourself to only use the material in your fabric stash for 60 days? Discounts and an accountability group available through the host. Use hashtag #StashUntilSeptember. Runs July 6 until September 4.


August Maker Challenges

Equinox Exchange 2021: share handmade kindness this fall by signing up to exchange a small gift with. The details are available on Ms. Cleaver’s site. Sign up by August 13 to be assigned a recipient and use hashtag #EquinoxExchange2021 when posting your received gift on Instagram. Ends September 22, 2021.

Sew Your Thanks: as a milestone for reaching 2000 followers on Instagram, Carole of @chatterstitch is hosting a body positivity sewing challenge. Learn to love your body as you pose in a handmade garment showing an area you would normally hide. If that’s too uncomfortable, use a flat lay of your outfit instead. Tag and follow the host and use hashtag #SewYourThanks for a chance to win prizes. Runs through August.

Every 2 days a new color combination will be featured and submissions will be judged by a panel. Use hashtag #ColoriCombo. Runs through September 30th.

Make Picturebook Fashion: join Nancy @maker.mother.crone in a laidback challenge. Revisit one of your favorite picturebooks and wear an outfit inspired by one. Share the book and outfit with the hashtag #MakePicturebookFashion throughout September.
