Welcome to the 2022 Maker Challenges list. Looking for DIY inspiration? You’re in the right place! This is the most comprehensive list of making challenges on the internet.

Ongoing Maker Challenges

Make 22 in 22: join @Deb of @sew_myself_a_capsule_wardrobe for a year long affair in making. Her goal is 22 garments, about 2 per month. Sewn, knitted, crocheted, and machine knitted garments all count. Tag the host and use hashtag #Make22in22 all year.

Sew Wonderwear 2022: an underwear sewing challenge from Nancy @maker.mother.crone to make any sort of DIY underwear throughout the year, either for yourself or loved one (even animals!). Follow Nancy and use the hashtag #SeWonderwear2022 throughout the year.

Sew Your Colors/Colours 22: join Hales Moore Sewing (@halesmooresewing on IG) sew clothes in colors that suit you or make you feel good. Use free color analysis apps if you’d like. There might be prizes! See all the details on this youtube video and post on Instagram using either hashtag #SewYourColors22 or #SewYourColours22. Tag the host if you’d like your post re-shared. Runs through 2022.

The Mendy Project: join me as I try (for the 3rd year in a row) to finish mending my stack of jeans…and other stuff. Use hashtag #TheMendyProject on Instagram or wherever you post your mending. Runs through 2022.


January Maker Challenges

Sewn with New Look: Minerva is hosting a challenge to show off anything you’ve made with a New Look pattern. 10 winners will win a £50 Minerva vouchers and 5 New Look patterns of their choice, courtesy of the Simplicity McCall’s Group. February Maker Challenges

Winners will be announced by Nateida on her YouTube channel. Ends Feb 28.

Deer & Doe Magnolia Sew Along: join Ann @annsewsmart in a sew along to make the Deer & Doe Magnolia dress just in time for spring. Comment on this post to be added to the Instagram group. No hashtag for this. Starts Feb 15 and runs to March 27.

Dress Like a Chameleon: join Kate @in_a_haystack and Liz @x_sewingpunk_x in a challenge to match your outfit to your surroundings. Post on Instagram using hashtag #DressLikeAChameleon. Runs through February.

Sew Your View: for February, make the free Avens Bodysuit pattern by Mood Fabrics. Tag @sewyourview and use the hashtag #SewYourView to show off your garments. Ends Feb 28.

Whole 30 Fabric Challenge: join host Jacinta @pinkmimosabyjacinta in using up (or giving away) your fabric stash. The goal is to use 30 yards of your existing fabric before buying anymore. And if you do buy some, then you have to start over. Jacinta even provided a link to a tracking spreadsheet. Use hashtag #Whole30FabricChallenge. Runs all of spring (fall for the southern hemisphere).


March Maker Challenges

Coloricombo: a color challenge for all artists. Hosted by @lorisiebert.studio and @estemacleod, the challenge includes prompts of color combinations every 3 days. The official hashtag is #ColoriCombo, but also add #ColoriFlori to be considered for prizes. Runs through March 30.

Sew Recreate the Look: join hosts Jen @jenlegg_teescreatives and Sharlene @sosewdressmaking. There are weekly prompts and categories are Best Basic, Best Copy, Best Interpretation, and Best International, Best Duo. Tag the hosts and use hashtag #SewRecreateTheLook. Runs through March 26th.

Wear Happy Color 2022: follow @katiekortmanart for weekly color prompts. Use hashtag #WearHappyColor2022 and tag the host for a chance to win weekly prizes. Runs all of March.

Literary Sewing Circle: part sewing circle, part book club! Read children’s book Premeditated Myrtle and draw inspiration from it to make your own garment. June Maker Challenges

2022 Art2Life International Juried Art Exhibition: the official call for entry will begin June 27th but you must be on the list to receive it and additional information. For now, the basic rules are:

  • open to all artists 18 years or older.
  • Non-refundable entry fee: $40 for up to 3 entries (no more than 3 entries may be entered)
  • No size restriction
  • This show is accepting only 2D mediums including painting, mixed media, collage, monoprints, monotypes, drawings and digital art. Artwork submitted must have been created within the last 24 months.
  • Deadline for submissions is July, 26, 2022 at 11:59pm PDT

Sew Fruity 22: join host @blossomsandwich in sewing something in a fruit print, or anything fruit inspired. Use hashtag #SewFruity22. Runs through June.

Sew Orange: join @see_dawson_sew and sew an orange project in preparation for Sew Orange Weekend June 3–5 and National Gun Violence Prevention Day June 3. This is an intentionally short challenge, so don’t feel pressure to finish!  Post pictures of in-progress and completed projects. Use the hashtag #SewOrange and flood social media with orange to honor victims of gun violence, demonstrate solidarity, and advocate for action that decreases gun deaths. Ends June 5.

July Maker Challenges

Mending Mayhem Bingo: join @mendingmayhem in an effort to work through your mending pile. Choose from 4 different bingo cards. Creativity and “cheating” is encouraged in this casual challenge. Use hashtag #MendingMayhemBingo.

Metro LA Call for Artists: open to all visual artists able to work in the United States (per Dept of Labor). Submit examples of up to 10 pieces of work through Metro LA’s portal for consideration to “design four (4) original, site-responsive artworks for large-scale temporary banners to be affixed to sound barrier walls” on a Metro extension project in West LA. More information, a video, and details on their website. Submissions due by Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at 11:59 pm (PDT).

Punk Frockers: the community sewing podcast has a monthly theme. July is all about representation. Post using the hashtag #pfRepresent on Instagram. Ends July 31.

Sew Color/Colour Blocking: using plain colors only (no prints), make a color- (or colour-) blocked garment. Use either hashtag #SewColorBlocking or #SewColourBlocking through July 31.

Sew Japanese in July: sew a Japanese pattern or use Japanese fabric to craft a garment. Follow @bloglessanna for this community event. Use hashtag #SewJapaneseInJuly throughout July.

Sew Mashup: join hosts @secret_life_of_a_seamstress and @cath_craft to create a brand new pattern by “mashing up” two existing patterns. Post on your grid by July 31 with hashtag #SewMashup. Winners announced 5 August.


August Maker Challenges

Ugly Art Club’s 5 Minute Challenge: a free challenge from the Ugly Art Club. Join for free today for official rules and prompts, but the point is to create art for 5 minutes in any medium every day from Monday, Aug 22 to Saturday, Sept 3. Use hashtags #TUAC5MinChallenge and #TheUglyArtClub.


September Maker Challenges

Designin’ December: join Linda behind the vintage-forward Thanks I Made It! for her annual challenge to recreate a designer original. There are rules and prizes, all of which can be found on the Thanks I Made It! website. Participate via blog or Instagram with hashtag #DesignInDecember. Final voting takes place on Dec 31.

Make a Garment a Month: the theme for September is “Shirty September.” Click the link for theme specifics. Then tag hosts @sewing_in_spain, @suestoney and @2ducks_swimming. Use hashtag #MAGAMSewAlong. Ends Sept 30.

Make Picture Book Fashion: revisit your favorite picture books and make an outfit inspired by them, then share the book AND garment/outfit by using hashtag(s) #MakePicturebookFashion/ #MakePicturebookFashion2022. Tag host @maker.mother.crone. Runs through Sept 30.

Second Hand September: pledge to only buy second-hand clothing in the month of September, if buying clothes at all. Follow @fash_rev for more details. Runs through Sept 30.

Sew Purple to End Alz 2022: sew anything purple to bring awareness to World Alzheimers Month 2022. Join host @therealmichellesewsagain and consider donating to her fundraiser. Details on this post. Hashtag: #SewPurpleToEndAlz22. Runs through Sept 30.
