Megan Nielsen – Sew My Style 2020 Designer Q&A

Megan Nielsen is unique from the Sew My Style perspective. She is the only pattern designer to have supported the sewing challenge from the very beginning! She has supplied patterns for the sewing challenge every year since its inception in 2017.

The first year we sewed up the Briar Sweater and T-shirt and also the Darling Ranges Dress. The following year, we capped it off with the Axel Skirt. And last year, we had a choice of the Ash jeans or Dawn jeans.

For Sew My Style 2020, Megan is offering the Tania Culottes, available in sizes 0-20 and 14-30.

If you’re new to sewing, this is a great way to jump in and make clothes right away with the help of a pretty supportive group of people.)

Based in Perth, Western Australia, Meg was originally a ready-to-wear designer. At the beginning of 2010, she launched her brand with a debut ready to wear collection – it was an instant hit. Since then she’s released 5 ready to wear collections, and in 2012 added a line of modern and easy to use sewing patterns based on her designs.

In this interview, Meg gives us some insight into her design process as well as some fun facts. Which side of the polarizing #teamcut vs #teamtrace debate are you on (meaning do you cut your patterns or do you trace them out)?

What is your name? Megan Nielsen

What is your company’s name and how did you come up with it? Megan Nielsen Patterns

How long has your company existed? Since 2010

When did you decide to become a pattern designer? My ready to wear collection was launched in 2010. After receiving numerous requests for tutorials on how to recreate my designs, I realized there was a gap in the market for contemporary, wearable and adaptable sewing patterns.

What inspired you to start creating patterns? I love sharing my designs with fellow sewers and seeing they have been empowered to create their own garments.

What background do you have in pattern design? I started sewing by teaching myself as a teenager and learnt to pattern draft when the clothing line was being developed.

What’s your favorite flavor ice cream and do you prefer a cone or a bowl? Cheesecake, in a waffle cone

Are you #teamcut or #teamtrace? #teamtrace

What is the one movie you HAVE to watch if it comes on TV? You’ve Got Mail

What was your favorite TV show as a kid? Felicity

When was the last time you sewed something for yourself and what was it? A Sudley dress just a couple of weeks ago.
